Why When and How the Organization Women for Women was Founded
“Women for Women International” is a humanitarian organization that provides practical and moral support to those women who survive wars. This nonprofit institution was founded in 1993 by a couple Zainab Salbi and Amjad Atallah. They were shocked after learning about the conditions of women in rape camps during the Yugoslav wars.
The slow response of the international community made them think of lending a helping hand to the forgotten women. “Women for Women” launched its activities by creating “sister-to-sister” connections between sponsors in the United States and women survivors of war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In the very first year of its activity, “Women for Women” worked with eight women only, and distributed approximately $9,000 as a direct aid. After gaining experience the organization enlarged the volume of its contributions.
In a nutshell, “Women for Women International” has helped over 462,000 marginalized women in countries affected by conflicts since 1993. It pursues ways of empowering women in 8 countries by offering support, tools, and access to life-changing skills.
Such activities help those women to get out of crisis and poverty, make their lives more stable and self-sufficient.
Aims and Mission of Women for Women
“Women for Women” is all about empowering women. When asked about the organization and its aims and missions, Lauri Adams, the president of “Women for Women” answered:
This begins with a choice of women here to sponsor a woman there. It is a program that works.
This is really to the point when one goes through all the achievements of this organization. Every member of its leadership team together with the founder always remains true to the spirit of their words and by empowering women they make even the conflict areas a better place for them to live. The team believes a woman is not a victim of war. She is an agent of peace.
Anyway, everybody knows that when a country is at war all hopes and dreams seem to turn into ashes. Everyday bombings, shootings, and high death tolls leave no chance to hope for better future.
In such conditions, women become more vulnerable. They get no money, cannot protect themselves and are deprived of any right to speak.
So, in this regard, the mission of “Women for Women International” is to support those women to earn and save money, improve health conditions, be aware of their rights and influence decisions both at home and community, connect to networks for support at the areas where military acts and clashes have become quite frequent.
Such contribution helps every woman to create tangible change for herself, family, and community.
To put it simply, “Women for Women” brings women together in a safer space to learn life, business, and vocational skills. Women increase their ability to earn an income with new skills that have huge demand. This results in stronger women, stronger families, and communities.
International media in its turn never stay aside when talking about “Women for Women”. Their work is covered in international media, such as BBC, CNN, MSNBC, The Guardian, The New York Times, 60 Minutes, and even The Oprah Winfrey Show. “Women for Women International” was honored with the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize in 2006.
This is how the organization brings global changes for the women dare to hope and dream.
How Women for Women Works?
The program designed by “Women for Women International” takes participants for a year. After enrolling they are divided into two groups. Within these groups, women undergo educational programs and gain skills, confidence, psychological healing, and mutual support to rebuild their lives after the war.
They learn about health and wellness practices as well. In case of necessity, they receive basic literacy or numeracy training to help them prepare for the second tier of the program.
Then each woman receives vocational and business training consistent with certain goals. This part of training is designed to strengthen existing skills and introduce new ones in both traditional and nontraditional fields.
Vocational skills engage women in various jobs in agriculture, livestock, food processing, industry, textile, and handicrafts. Besides women receive a stipend as well.
Collaborations with “Women for Women International”
When this organization handles the hard task of empowering women in conflict areas they tend to collaborate with local NGOs or other local institutions. Years of conflict and instability in Iraq and neighboring Syria have formed a huge threat to women in terms of gender-bias.

Together they hold supporting programs to help Syrian and Yezidi women overcome severe emotional trauma. Such joint work is worth mentioning actually. However, the most remarkable one is that with L.K.Bennet.
L.K.Bennett and “Women for Women International” Collaboration
