Women empowerment speech can make immense changes in women’s lives. We’ve collected powerful speeches by UN women which are extremely inspiring.
UN is the most suitable platform to touch upon global issues and be heard by high-profile decision makers. Famous women also take advantage of this opportunity and deliver a women empowerment speech which impacts people on a larger scale.
These women empowerment speeches share all the problems and bias behaviour women face today and call everybody to fight for equality. Meghan Markle, Emma Watson, and many other outstanding people speak up from the UN stage to make changes in the world.
Here are some of the most remarkable women empowerment speeches made at UN by equally remarkable women.
UN Women Empowerment Speech #1: Emma Watson: Gender Equality is your Issue Too
In 2014 after her appointment as a UN Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson made an amazing women empowerment speech which went viral through international media. It also announced the beginning of the “He for She” campaign.
As a feminist Emma has both beauty and brains. At a very young age, she realized she was a feminist and questioned “gender-based assumptions.” Self-experience is one of the main points of her speech.
Emma also explains that real feminism has nothing to do with man-hating. It is just the opposite. Inequality can be defeated through joint power. The actress calls all men and boys to fight for justice. The pay gap is another issue included in her speech.
This women empowerment speech is included on my list because Emma Watson’s “He for She” campaign that was launched on the day of her speech still goes on and makes changes through various projects.
UN Women Empowerment Speech #2: Meghan Markle
After their big news, many people associate Meghan Markle either with the TV show “Suits”, or with Prince Harry. But this American actress is also famous for her commitment to championing women’s rights and her women empowerment speech at the UN.
As a humanitarian, Markle has made a name for herself in the activism world by getting involved in a number of philanthropic projects. She is the global ambassador of World Vision, advocate for UN Women, and counsellor for One Young World.
Like Emma Watson, Markle has had that true spirit of a feminist since her childhood. When she was 11 years old she wrote a letter to Hilary Clinton to change a commercial for this dishwashing liquid with the tagline going like, “Women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans.”
The word “women” was removed from the ad. At the age of 11, she had created her small level of impact by standing up for equality. This is how Meghan starts her speech on gender equality at the UN.
The personal story is followed by some statistics about President Kagame of Rwanda and the country’s parliament which comprises of 64% female leaders. Meghan voices her support for gender equality. She believes that women are and should be equal to men socially. And she adds:
It is said that girls with dreams become women with vision. May we empower each other to carry out such vision — because it isn’t enough to simply talk about equality. One must believe it. And it isn’t enough to simply believe in it. One must work at it. Let us work at it. Together. Starting now.
Harry is a lucky guy. Both of them fight for the equality of women.
UN Women Empowerment Speech #3: Lakshmi Puri: Together we Will Unleash Girl Power in All its Dimensions
Lakshmi Puri is the UN Women deputy executive director and she made the speech during the UN commemoration of International Day of the Girl Child in October 2017.
This women empowerment speech is a complex one and touches upon many girl issues besides gender bias. The speech outlines that adolescent girls face discrimination quite often just because of their gender and age.
Then they are treated partially due to their ethnic background, sexual identity, religion and other compounded factors.
However, Lakshmi Puri also points out that women and girls are not only helpless victims, they are sources of power to deal with hardships, to prevent, to reduce risk. They are ready to make a change and build back after the crisis.
That is why everyone in the world should make sure that girls are granted all opportunities they deserve regardless of all the above-mentioned factors.
Moreover, the societies should get rid of “boy preference” and “girl aversion” culture. To achieve all these goals Lakshmi is sure that:
We also need to create safe spaces in which these girls can feel empowered. Empowering girls must also form the core of any protection and humanitarian service provision and resilience building.
UN Women Empowerment Speech #4: Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka: Working as One, to Enhance the Lives of Women
Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka is a UN Under-secretary-general and executive director of UN Women. The speech is devoted to reproductive health and rights in the economic empowerment of women.
Phumzile outlines the challenges for those women who are dependent on their partners that do not respect them. A woman is at higher risk if she has the burden of unpaid care work and has no control over income or has no personal income at all.
Accordingly, when a girl lives in a community in extreme poverty, her parents may think that she also has to provide income for the family. This leads to marrying her off, and the girl is put at risk again. When a girl or a woman works in the informal sector, where access to services can be very patchy, they are at risk. Phumzile insists that;
whether a woman is in the informal sector, formal sector, rich or poor, all of them can have access to the services that they need.
Child or premature marriage is another threat to young girls. The risk is even higher for girls who are displaced for one reason or another such as military acts or clashes.
This speech is quite influential and important one. By touching upon the topics such as early marriages, limited resources available for women that Phumzile raises awareness throughout the world.
