Why should we all be feminists? Have you ever asked that question? There is so much controversy about this one simple term. Many people keep saying that we should all be feminists, others oppose it.
The term “feminist” is one which has come across a lot of controversy and criticism over the past few decades. There are people who believe that feminism is equivalent to man-hating, and that it is a movement which believes that women are superior to men.
There are also people who think that all feminists look or behave a certain way. While there are people who do abuse the term “feminist,” the overall meaning of the movement is not one which should be looked down upon at all.
The definition of feminism is the theory that men and women should be equal politically, economically, and socially. Therefore, the basic definition of feminism is that it is a movement which believes that men and women should be equal.
Here are reasons why we should all be feminists or consider ourselves a feminist.
Reasons Why We Should All Be Feminists #1 | Women and men should be treated as equals
This should perhaps be one of the most important reasons why we should all be feminists. Many of the reasons people find to support that men and women are not equal are simply social constructs.
Yes, there are differences between men and women- in our physiological makeup, genetics, biology, and even our thought processes. However, this is not a reason as to why women should be treated as inferiors or vice versa.
There should be no reason as to why women do not have the same opportunities as men, and vice versa. There are still people today who do not think that men and women are equal, and that women and men should not be treated as equals, and that is a huge problem within our society.
It causes many women to stay behind and not succeed in the way they have the potential of succeeding, and it also puts a lot of pressure on men.
Reasons Why We Should All Be Feminists #2 | Women who are victims of sexual assault are often blamed and slut-shamed
Rape is one of the most underreported crimes- and that is not for a silly reason. Women who report that they have been raped or sexually assaulted are often not believed or worse, told that they deserved what had happened to them, because of the way they were dressed or where they were that day.
When people find out that a woman has been raped, the first thing they tend to ask her is what she was wearing- as if what she wore meant that she deserved to be assaulted. Women are told to keep quiet and not discuss these things which have happened to them.
There are people who make jokes about rape and who think that it is ok to force someone into having sex, which is never acceptable or justifiable- no matter where a person was, what they were doing, or how they were dressed.
The way rape is prosecuted needs to change and this is why everyone should be a feminist.
Reasons Why We Should All Be Feminists #3 | Cleaning and cooking are seen as activities solely for women
While in many Western countries, this is slowly changing, most people still consider cooking and cleaning to be solely feminine activities. While women tend to do activities around the house more than men do, this does not mean that men should not participate whatsoever in keeping the house clean or cooking.
Say a man lives alone, or his wife/other woman he lives with is sick and unable to cook or clean, is he supposed to live in a mess and starve because a woman is not available to cook or clean for him?
Whoever decided that basics such as preparing food to eat and keeping the house clean are activities that only women are to perform, and not men as well? It should be widely accepted that if you live somewhere, you should help in the daily activities of running that place- and that does not matter if you are a man or a woman.
No one should be responsible for cleaning or cooking for you all the time, and cleaning and cooking should not be seen as activities that only women should do anymore.
Reasons Why We Should All Be Feminists #4 | Domestic violence is not taken seriously in some countries (especially if a man is the victim)
Many people believe that no man should ever raise his hand against a woman, but there are also people who think that women should be beaten so that they can be properly disciplined or, depending on what they have done, because they deserve it.
This is obviously not talking about the case where a woman beats someone up and that person defends themselves. There are people who report that they have been victims of domestic violence who are not taken seriously, or who are turned away from getting any help from the authorities because in some places, it is believed that especially a husband has the right to beat his wife.
There are also many people who do not take male victims of domestic violence seriously either. Sometimes, a man can report that he is the victim of domestic violence and will be laughed at, because it is believed that since he is a man, he should be able to defend himself and be strong.
Since feminism is for equality of both sexes, it is important to also fight for male victims as well, and to not excuse women who are perpetrators.
Reasons Why We Should All Be Feminists #5 | Women compete with and feel threatened by each other instead of empowering one another
An unfortunate activity that many women participate in is comparing themselves to one another and talking negatively about one another. It is very common for women to be jealous of each other and try to bring each other down.
This is unfortunate and only sets women’s rights back a few decades instead of allowing us to advance and move forward. Women should focus on complimenting one another, trying to raise one another up especially when going through tough times, trying to make each other feel beautiful, smart, and special, and more.
It should never be a competition to see who is more beautiful, who can get more men, who has the best figure, who is able to lose weight the fastest, and more. It is an important tenet of feminism for women to be able to treat one another as equals and as sisters.
Reasons Why We Should All Be Feminists #6 | There are women worldwide who greatly need people to support their rights
Unfortunately, there are some women who live in other countries throughout the world who are not afforded the same rights as they are in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere. There are countries where women are not even allowed to go out in public without a man’s permission.
In some countries, sex-selective abortions are common because people prefer to have male children over female children, as males are more important. There are also countries where female genital mutilation is common so as to prevent women from receiving sexual pleasure.
Some women throughout the world are not able to be literate or to have the same level or similar level of education as men are. In some countries, women overall do not have the same rights as men have.
This is an unfortunate circumstance, and women need to support each other throughout the world so that we can move forward, and so that women in other countries do not have to suffer anymore.
Reasons Why We Should All Be Feminists #7 | There are many double standards placed upon men and women
There are many beliefs that people have regarding how women and men should act, behave, and look which simply do not make sense.
For example, men are rewarded for being promiscuous, using women, and trying to have as many sexual partners as possible. But if a woman even tries to have more than one sexual partner, she is considered to be a slut, easy, and no one wants her for serious matters; they try to use her just for sex.
Men are allowed to have careers and be good parents, but sometimes women are criticized for wanting to have a great career and for wanting to be great mothers. They are sometimes forced to choose between the two- and are criticized even further if they choose not to have kids.
Another very common example is that if a man is ambitious and assertive, and wants to go forward in his career, this is considered to be admirable and commendable. But if a woman shows similar characteristics, then she is considered to be a bitch.
These double standards put a lot of pressure on both men and women, because they are forced to try and behave in ways which are impossible and do not follow these beliefs, and therefore, they are criticized.
While there are many things that need to be done for men and women to be fully equal, if people cease to put a negative name to feminism and to judge the movement based on the actions and beliefs of a few, it can change a lot of things.
The entire basis of the movement is that men and women deserve to be treated as equals and have equal opportunities; why shouldn’t they? What is stopping us from moving forward as a society?
