Selena Gomez and her kidney donor made headlines last summer after the pop star made a very touching post on Instagram. It revealed that her life hung by a thread. However, her best friend was there to save her.
Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light.
This quote is to the point when we talk about Selena Gomez and her kidney donor, Francia Raisa.
Last summer the Internet blew after the netizens found out that Selena had undergone a kidney transplantation. But what caught attention most was Selena’s kidney donor. The latter turned out to be her BFF.
Can you imagine a friendship to be this strong? Francia was ready to go to the bitter end just to save her friend’s life. Although the recovery process was quite hard for both of them, they didn’t give up. Moreover, the surgery made them closer. Now they call each other sis!
Their inspiring story comes to break all the bad stereotypes about women’s friendship. It is not about gossiping, roaming along the best stores or talking only about beauty products and the most fashionable hairstyles. Their friendship can be about saving and changing the life of a soulmate.
Selena Gomez and Her Kidney Donor: The ultimate gift from BFF
Selena Gomez was first diagnosed with lupus back in 2015. After getting some treatment it was found out she needed a kidney transplant. Her best friend Francia Raisa left her career aside and decided to get tested. Fortunately, she was a match.
Soon in summer of 2017 Selena’s kidney donor and BFF Francia donated her kidney to a lifetime friend.
It was only in September that the two of them opened up about the surgery. They confessed they had gone through hard times. However, the surgery only extended their families and made them more than friends.
Under most circumstances, a friend is someone who celebrates with you in the good times, helps you get through the bad, watches cheesy reality shows with you. These are just the basics.
But when one is willing to give you an actual organ from her own body, that is how you know you have a BFF for life. You become a very lucky person. Now let’s see what these lucky ones told most popular magazines and newspapers about their friendship and the hardest experience of their lives.
Selena Gomez kidney donor, Francia Raisa’s candid talk with the W magazine after the surgery
After donating her kidney to her BFF Francia Raisa sat down with W magazine to talk about the experience the two friends had to overcome. She looked back on her wild year that started with changing her friend’s life and ended with a starring role in a hit TV series called “Grown-Ish”.
Francia and Selena have been friends for nearly ten years. So after almost a decade of friendship, Raisa moved in with Gomez, who was living in a temporary accommodation.
While living together, Gomez’s lupus began to take a turn for the worse. She needed a kidney transplant badly. She couldn’t even rely on the waitlist as it was seven to ten years.
It was right at that time that Francia decided to get tested. She turned out to be a match, and last summer Francia underwent the procedure to give Gomez a kidney transplant.
It was a three-hour surgery for each. “Recovery was hard,” Raisa shared. “I didn’t want to eat, I didn’t want to drink anything. Selena did have a complication, too.”
Gomez and Raisa kept the news of the surgery under wraps for weeks. They told only their close friends and family members. Soon they together appeared on the Today show to share their story. “We didn’t want to tell anybody because recovery was very hard for us, and we went through a depression at the time,” Raisa said.
We kind of just wanted to be normal and not have that attention on us.
Now both Selena and her kidney donor Francia Raisa have big plans for future. Raisa, for instance, is actively working on her series. At the end of the interview with W, she added with a smile on her face: “2018 I am just enjoying. The show is a hit. My health is good. I have a new home, I have an amazing new boyfriend that I met on set. I went back to dance class for the first time last week. Now I’m more motivated and inspired than ever.

2017 was quite a year for Selena Gomez. During that year he passed through many achievements as well as ups and downs. Selena’s year started from her new music to executive producing a hit Netflix series, to her health struggles and continued Instagram fame and Billboard honored her with “Woman of the Year” award at the 2017 Billboard Women in Music event.
If you are her fan you were probably left speechless after her speech at Billboard Women.
Do you know who represented her with the award “Woman of the year”? Who else if not Francia Raisa! It is really worth watching. Gomez almost immediately teared up after receiving the award from Raisa, saying she saved her life.
This is how she began: “I feel incredibly lucky. Honestly, I couldn’t be more grateful for the position I’ve been given in my career. I want people to know I respect the platform that I have so deeply.” After thanking Fanning and Raisa, Gomez added; “I don’t know how I’ll ever repay it but maybe I’ll make an epic album next year.”
So I guess we will witness something unusual from Selena Gomes. Looking forward to her new works. I can bet they are going to be super emotional and beautiful.
The story behind Selena Gomez and her kidney donor’s friendship! Interesting Facts about Francia and Selena
After Selena gave special shout-outs to her generous kidney donor everybody wanted to figure out who she was and how they made friends. One can only admire and even envy their friendship as it is a true one. Back in 2013, Raisa did an interview with Latina in which she described how she and Gomez established their friendship.
“Six years ago Disney and ABC Family had the stars of their shows go to the Children’s Hospital,” Francia shared with the publication. “Selena and I were in the same group and we just clicked.”
Even though she is 29, a four-year age gap hasn’t stood between Francia and her pop star bestie Selena Gomez. In fact, it seems to have only strengthened their bond. The actress is fond of calling Selena her little sister. As for Gomez, she also calls Francia her sister.
Within the ten years that they have been friends, the pop star and Raisa have been spotted out and about together at several different events, including nights out at popular LA restaurant called “The Nice Guy.” And a few years ago, they even made this kind of ridiculous and funny choreographed music video to Dustin Tavella’s song called “Everybody Knows (Douchebag).”
2017 was a special year for the two of them. Raisa’s tribute to Selena Gomez on her birthday in 2017 was really sweet. However, in 2016, she took the opportunity to explain exactly how much her best friend means to her.
They use to share a lot of the pics on Instagram. And while sharing a photo of the two of them together, Francia shared a story about how Gomez went out of her way to help her through a hard time she was going through.
And even without the kidney donation which is a sign of such a huge devotion these two obviously have a really special kind of friendship. There is clearly so much love between them, and now, their bond must be even stronger and firmer after an experience like the surgery they had during previous summer.
Unless you have been through it yourself, it is hard to imagine what it must be like to make up your mind to donate an organ your organism itself cannot lose. Nobody can imagine what it feels to be on either giving or receiving an end of such a life-changing gift like a kidney transplant. Even so, it is very clear that what Francia Raisa and Selena Gomez share is a truly beautiful friendship. It might sound very cruel but that kind of devotion can be hard to find in our days.
Hopefully, they both had an easy recovery after their surgeries, and it is nice to know that they had each other to lean on during that process and other hardships as well. With ten years of amazing memories behind them, it will be fun to watch what the future holds for these two BFFs.
