Problems women face today in America are many. Why being one of the oldest democratic countries, the US still can’t accept women equal to men. Why American women face multiple challenges just for being a woman?
It’s no news that the USA is a land of opportunities. Nearly everyone is ready to overpass oceans to pursue the American dream. But is America that perfect that attracts people so much? Or perhaps there are shortcomings outsiders are not aware of?
No one can say that these shortcomings are out of the question because there are problems women face today in America. Though some victories for women mark the 21st century, deeply rooted challenges make women not enough trustworthy. They are still regarded with prejudice and are shrouded in groundless stereotypes.
Problems Women Face Today
1977 Conference about Women’s Rights that Split America Into Two Parts
In early 70s women’s movements and campaigns were on a streak. The 92nd Congress developed women’s rights bills including the Title IX section of the Education Amendments. It banned gender bias in all aspects of education programs and gained federal support.
Even the anti-feminist President Nixon supported a 1972 Republican Party platform that included feminist goals and federal childcare projects. This was a huge success and soon feminism gained steam.
Women all over the USA formed rape crisis centers and shelters for victims of domestic violence. To crown it all, the Equal Rights Amendment came to life. It aimed at equality between men and women in all aspects of life.
The American society, however, was split into two. In 1972, conservative leader Phyllis Schlafly launched a new movement. Their primary objective was to protect women’s place as homemakers, fight against abortion, and restrict government welfare and social support.
In a nutshell, those two campaigns came to shape the modern debate over women’s rights and the role of government in enforcing them. The conservatives campaigned hard to kill the ERA. Soon feminists made an effort to oppose them.
The result of these efforts was the National Women’s Conference. The conference was meant to unite all women and give them an opportunity to speak up about their hopes for the future. Instead, the conference became a battleground like every clash between opposite parties. This is why problems women face today in America haven’t been solved yet. The gap in this debate seems endless.
Problems Women Face Today in America
As you see the early 70s were quite remarkable in terms of women’s rights. It was in 1979 that U.S. government asked women gathered at Houston what they wanted. It was right at that time that the very same government promised: “to accept nothing less than justice for every woman.”
Since those times, American women have symbolized freedom of actions, speech, equal rights and stuff. They also have created the image of tough-minded, high-powered businesswomen climbing the corporate ladder.
But the mood of 2017 still remains quite different. Women fight for equal pay, access to education, affordable childcare and laws against domestic violence. Moreover, street harassment is another challenge. According to several statistics, 1 out of 6 American women are victims of attempted or completed rape.
These figures tend to grow because nobody thinks of giving up on stereotypes about women. These stereotypes in their turn lead to problems women face today in America.
Challenges & Problems Women Face Today in America #1 | Equal Pay
When governments enforce laws they tend to minimize or remove the disorders that occur in their states. In other words, laws are passed to create an EQUAL environment for everybody regardless their race, nation, gender, and age.
Accordingly, the Equal Pay Act passed in 1963 was meant to ban gender-based wage discrimination. But the history of world populations comes to prove that nobody cares about laws. They are breached anytime and anywhere.
This is why American women still receive an average of 77 cents to every dollar men earn. Unfortunately, stories of payment inequality have become too common.
Challenges & Problems Women Face Today in America #2 | Limited Professional Fields for Women
Teachers, nurses, and secretaries are the most common professional fields that one subconsciously associates with women. What does this mean? Are women incompetent in other fields?
According to a research carried in 2004, 16.8 percent of large law-firm partners were women. 1 out of every 7 engineering students is female, and women are responsible for nearly 6 percent of chief executives of the top 100 tech companies.
This really absurd and nothing more than senseless approach. Women can prove to be competent in nearly every sphere.
Challenges & Problems Women Face Today in America #3 | Unaffordable Education
Without knocking around here are some statistics. 2016 U.S. Census Bureau estimated:
- Women are 35% more likely to live in poverty
- 1 in 8 women lived in poverty in 2015
- 1 in 3 single mothers lived in poverty in 2015
Shocked? This is about the era where world superpowers fight to cut poverty and to create an equality among two genders. Some people even dare to say they made a huge success while overcoming the problem.
However, these figures show right the opposite. Did their efforts dwindle away? Perhaps yes, because women still live in poverty and they do not share equal rights with men. So let’s be frank, guys! Reducing poverty for women requires investments in support systems, employment initiatives, and education.
The latter is an effective way to empower women. However, the unaffordable education is a huge problem women face today in America. The majority of American women cannot afford education just because the housing or other expenses make the half of their income.
Challenges & Problems Women Face Today in America #4 | Politics
Politics actually is not something new to American women. Even before the right to vote many women passed important legislation and fought for equality. One can definitely come across the names of women who made American political history.
Anyway, people can’t stop thinking about politics as a man’s domain. Women are found too weak and emotional to make a serious decision. This is why politics is one of the problems women face today in America.
Women make up just 19% of all members of Congress and 25% of state legislators. However, women such as Hilary Clinton or Barbara Franklin come to prove just that women can deal with politics.
Challenges & Problems Women Face Today in America #5 | Healthcare
On June 22, 2017, U.S. Senate passed a new healthcare bill called “Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017.” Form the very first sight it might seem quite encouraging. However, many healthcare experts and medical groups were concerned with the Senate’s version of the bill.
They voiced its potential impact on low-income Americans and especially women. According to them, this legislation deliberately strips the landmark women’s health gains made by the previous Affordable Care Act. It might even limit access to care.
Challenges & Problems Women Face Today in America #6 | Domestic Violence
British people say: “My home is my castle”. Probably it is true about all nations. Home and family are something warm and pleasant one relishes after tiring business day for instance.
Unfortunately, domestic violence has become one of the top issues discussed in the USA. American women are the main victims. Statistics reveal that 4.7 million American women experience physical violence by a family member each year.
Family expenses, devalued interests just add up the list of problems American women have at home.
Challenges & Problems Women Face Today in America #7 | Beauty Standard Myths
The United States of America is not only a huge melting pot of nations, it is one of the fashion “gurus” as well. Alongside with Milan, Paris, and London, New York is considered a world fashion hub. So it’s not surprising that it may dictate some beauty standards.
Are you aware of 90-60-90? The modern fashion industry has abolished this beauty standard but still, there are some beauty myths which may cost your own health.
Actually, those beauty standard challenges, especially in Hollywood, are one of the main problems women face today. Have unnecessary weight? You are not suitable for this role! Give it up. Your appearance or complexion is not good enough to appear on screens, blah, blah. blah.
These are the main challenges for those who want to be in the spotlight. The results sometimes can be fatal for women. To gain the desired effect they do plastic surgery or follow a crazy diet.
Being a Woman Ain’t That Easy
It goes without saying that the fight for equality has already granted some results. Today women in America have wider employment opportunities. They dare voice their problems, held campaigns and make changes.
However, having the right to vote, being a politician or a famous Hollywood star can’t keep a woman away from deeply rooted stereotypes. Problems women face today in America are of older background.
Probably it will take much time to overcome those challenges. Thus, being a woman is not that easy as it may seem.
