Madonna’s speeches about women’s rights and feminism are undoubtedly very inspiring and uplifting. Her speeches during Billboard Music Awards and Women’s march about feminism are among the most famous ones.
Madonna is a figure who is very passionate about women’s rights and feminism. She tends to be greatly associated with the feminist movement, and is considered to be a sex symbol.
Madonna is considered to have completely revolutionized how young women can be both completely feminine and sexual beings and at the same time completely control every aspect of their lives.
Madonna has made several speeches throughout her career which have been highly influential and moving about feminism. Here are two of Madonna’s speeches regarding women’s rights.
Madonna’s Speeches #1 | Woman of the Year Billboard 2016 Acceptance Speech
Madonna has been recognized in 2016 as the highest-grossing female touring artist of all time. On December 9, 2016, Madonna was honored as Woman of the Year at the Billboard’s Women in Music 2016 event.
What was most memorable about the event, though, was her acceptance speech. She began the speech with a lewd joke- “I always feel better with something hard between my legs”- and continued by referring to herself as a doormat, which symbolized what it really means to be a female performer.
She sarcastically thanked the audience for allowing her to continue her career, which has spanned over the course of 3 decades, while being the victim of sexism, misogyny, consistent bullying, and relentless abuse.
She went on to speak about her life while in New York, talking about how dangerous it was and how she lost almost all of her friends and loved ones to AIDS, drugs, or gunshots.
She herself was raped with a knife held to her throat on a rooftop. Madonna also shared that, while in New York, her apartment had been robbed and broken into so often that she finally stopped locking her apartment doors.
She stated that in our world, in reality, the only safety anyone truly has is themselves and their belief in themselves.
Society does not allow women to age
Madonna continued that she was inspired throughout her career by David Bowie because he represented both male and female aspects, and this made her believe that there were no rules for artists.
However, she found out throughout her career that this was not the case. Madonna shared that, if one is a man, then there are no rules for him; if one is a woman, then she has to abide by an entire slew of rules.
Women have to be pretty, cute, and sexy, but they are not allowed to be too intelligent or have opinions which do not follow what the majority of society believes.
Women are not allowed to age whatsoever, because then their careers will suffer as none of their work will be displayed and they will be constantly critiqued in the media.
Women also are allowed to be objectified by men, and they are allowed to dress in clothing that would be considered slutty, but they are not allowed to be proud of their bodies.
Madonna even thanked her haters
She continued on to state that many women feel as though they need to support or be supported by a man in order to move forward in their careers. Because of the way society operates, many women base their worth on how a man feels about them.
She shared the message that all women need to recognize their own worth and appreciate the worth of other women. Women need to support, be inspired by, and collaborate with other strong women.
She concluded her speech by thanking both her supporters and her haters, because those who have doubted and criticized her have made her stronger and ultimately gave her the confidence to be more successful.
She stated that she realized she was no longer able to be the victim of any circumstance, and instead, she had to remain strong and learn from every single obstacle she had to face because of her haters or from any other difficulty throughout her life and career.
Analysing Madonna’s Billboard Speech
Madonna made very important points throughout her speech. Many women, particularly in the entertainment industry, are subject to double standards, and some which completely contradict each other.
How can a woman be expected to be both smart and stupid, slutty and prudish? How is a woman supposed to not age? These unrealistic standards prevent women from living up to their full potential and from being fully confident in themselves and their bodies.
Women who are confident in themselves are criticized for being so, because, in today’s society, women are not supposed to love their bodies or themselves.
Madonna shared how these expectations have been huge obstacles for her throughout the course of her career, but they ultimately made her stronger and helped her have a more successful career. Perhaps, in fact, because of these obstacles, Madonna became an inspiration for many young women worldwide.
Madonna’s Speeches #2 | Women’s March in Washington, 2017
During the first Women’s March in Washington, D.C., on January 21st, 2017, Madonna made a surprise appearance. She also gave a speech which included many F-bombs.
She expressed her anger in America’s decision to elect Donald Trump President and stated that America was basically doomed because of policies that would further oppress women. Some news stations even cut off parts of her speech because of how many swears she used.
Madonna began her speech by welcoming everyone to the revolution, where no one would accept how women and minorities were marginalized and oppressed.
She continued that she would not accept living in a world where looking or being different from the rest may be considered a crime or looked down upon.
She claimed that the result of this election, which Madonna referred to as “this darkness,” is what ultimately caused everyone to wake up and realize what was really going on in the world around them.
She called upon everyone to unite in solidarity for love and equality. She stated that this was simply the beginning of new changes that were about to be made and towards a world where people are more loving and caring.
Madonna claimed that righteousness did not win in the past election, but that it will prevail in the end. She continued to state that there is power in unity and that it is important for everyone who is fighting for the same cause- equality and freedom- to stand strong together.
She continued on to critique those who believe that the Women’s March would not end up changing anything, because it was only the beginning of what she believes to be a very important and much-needed change. She insisted to everyone in the crowd that they were ready to unite and make this change.
Blowing Up the White House Out of Anger
Madonna then made the very controversial statement that she has thought about blowing up the White House out of her anger, but knew that doing so would not change anything.
She recited a quote by poet W.H. Aden, which was stated right before World War II began: “We must love one another or die.” Madonna then led the crowd in a chant that they all choose love.
While Madonna certainly made a speech filled with very strong words and quotes, that may or may not have been highly controversial, she also did have an important point to make.
Whether it is because of the current American president or because of changes occurring in the overall world, this past American presidential election did wake up many prejudices in many people.
Many Americans believed that America and the world was advancing in the realms of feminism and equality, but now people are beginning to wonder if we are in fact a few steps behind where we originally thought.
There have been many setbacks for women in America, and especially for minorities. Many more Americans have been revealed as being racists or have been accused of sexual misconduct.
More and more shootings have occurred all across the United States, to the point where there has been one school shooting per week in 2018.
Madonna calls herself a “bad feminist”
It is important for everyone to ultimately stand united and to not let prejudices that others hold get the best of them. It is important that, no matter which sort of laws legislators pass, and no matter what some people believe, everyone understands that everyone deserves to have the same opportunities as the next person and deserves to be treated with the same respect and dignity as everyone else.
This does not exclude anyone based on their gender or skin color. While we have gone far in advancing women’s rights, there is still much work to be done.
Madonna is known for being very outspoken and fiery. Throughout her career, she has been known for being bold and different from the rest. She considers herself to be a strong advocate for women’s rights and a feminist, but she has labeled herself as a “bad feminist.”
This is due to the fact that she has been criticized by feminist writers, especially academic Camille Paglia, because of the fact that she likes to represent herself sexually. Madonna claims that she is proud of how she represents herself and is proud to be a bad feminist.
