What is the He for She campaign?
Initiated by UN Women and the United Nations entity for gender equality and the empowerment of women, this solidarity movement has a systematic approach and platform where men and boys can not only be engaged but also become change agents for the achievement of women’s rights and gender equality.
Of course, achieving all these requires an innovative approach that recognizes men and boys as women’s rights partners. This campaign was launched on 20 September 2014, at the United Nations by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador, Emma Watson.
And since its start, millions of men from around the globe have committed to gender equality. Interestingly, HeForShe has been the topic of more than 2 billion conversations on social media, furthermore, its offline activities reached every corner of the globe.
What’s the mission of He for She campaign?
Initially, the goal of He for She campaign was to mobilize 1 billion men to speed up the achievement of gender equality. This movement uses online, offline and mobile phone technology in order to activate men from all over the world.
The journey of the HeForShe first began with a simple statement that gender equality is not only an issue concerning to women, but it’s a human rights issue that requires not only the participation but also commitment of men. The campaign then moved beyond the awareness that encouraged men to say what they will do to make a difference.
By the way, the He For She campaign logo is quite interesting as it unites traditional icons of two genders that create a new symbol for our shared humanity. It has dynamic shape and strong contrast that somewhat remind us what is possible to realize when unique individuals unit together for the benefit of all.
Based on the idea that gender equality is an issue that affects all people and in all aspects He for She campaign seeks to actively involve men and boys in a movement that was originally formulated as “a struggle for women by women”.
Interestingly, on the HeForShe website, you can find a map that uses a geo-locator that shows global engagement in the campaign and counts the number of men and boys around the world that are engaged in the HeForShe pledge.
IMPACT 10x10x10 initiative
UN Women launched the IMPACT 10x10x10 initiative to receive further promotion in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment. It was launched as a one-year pilot effort to engage governments, universities and corporations as key instruments of all these changes.
This initiative targets those that have the greatest capacity to influence the changes. Global leaders that serve as IMPACT 10x10x10 founding champions include H.E. Prime Minister Mark Rutte of the Netherlands; H.E. Prime Minister Stefan Löfvén of Sweden; H.E. President Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra Leone; Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever; Rick Goings, chairman and CEO of Tupperware Brands Corporation; Dennis Nally, chairman of PricewaterhouseCoopers International Ltd and many others.
Popular British actor and UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador, Emma Watson serves as the public face of the movement. Talking about this initiative she noted, “The groundswell of response we have received in support for HeForShe tells us we are tapping into what the world wants: to be a part of the change.
Now we have to channel that energy into purposeful action. The pilot initiative provides that framework. Next, we need all country leadership, as well as that of hundreds of universities and corporations to follow HeForShe’s IMPACT 10x10x10 so as to bring an end to the persisting inequalities faced by women and girls globally.”
Emma Watson speech at UN meeting
A special event was held to mark the beginning of the HeForShe campaign on 20 September 2014 at the Headquarters of the United Nations in New York. At that event, UN Women made a call to mobilize the first 100,000 men in the campaign, a goal that was successfully reached in just three days.
Former United States President Barack Obama and former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon are among some of the high-profile male champions featured on this campaign. Besides them, there are many other male celebrities that participate in this movement.
Some of them are Jared Leto, Matt Damon, Eddie Redmayne, Ben Barnes, Harry Styles, Peter Gallagher, Matthew Lewis, Tom Hiddleston, Russell Crowe, Douglas Booth, Forest Whitaker, Nigel Barker and many others. They said that they fully support and stand with Emma Watson and encouraged her to continue her passionate project.
The event was hosted by UN Women Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson, whose touching speech about her own path to feminism and her call to involve men and boys in promoting gender equality was widely circulated on social media. In particular, Emma Watson asked the world to take action to build a new solidarity movement for gender equality with her speech at the United Nations.
Talking about feminism Watson said, “Why has the word become such an unpopular one?” a question that shows the false opinion that today’s society has about this movement.
The beloved actress used her personal experience, describing how she questioned “gender-based assumptions” while growing up. She also added that she was confused at being called “bossy” just because she wanted to direct school plays and to address the worldwide issue. Also, Emma Watson described in her speech the HeForShe campaign as one seeking to end the “us vs. them” mentality and disassociate feminism with “man-hating.”
