Feminist men, a term that we don’t come across very often. But does it really mean there are no male feminists? It’s an absolute lie that there are no such men. You guys are going to be surprised by seeing so many Hollywood celebs, that you probably had a crush on, who are actually feminists.
And now there’s gonna be people saying that many of these celebs have never actually called themselves feminist men. Here is what: the thing is that feminism is not a political party and no one needs to announce himself as a member or an opposition.
Feminism is a state of mind, it is a simple understanding that men and women were, are and always should be equal. They deserve equal rights, equal opportunities and equal treatment.
Yep, it’s as simple as that. If these celebrities, businessmen, your cousin, uncle, or you yourself have this simple understanding of gender equality, then congratulations ─ YOU’RE A FEMINIST!
The horribly misunderstood notion that feminism is a man-hating movement is already going overboard. But, lucky for us, there still are people who believe in equal rights and who are not afraid to voice their opinion even if they are called with the “scary word” feminist.
So, let’s not let this list wait for too long. Meet 10 gentlemen who are standing up for feminism!
1) Feminist Men ─ Tom Hardy
Now you may be thinking what? Is that true? In fact, yes! Tom Hardy beautifully and laconically shut the Canadian journalist up, who probably thought he was saying something smart.
To the question, if he was not concerned about so many women in the script, Tom simply said, “No! Not for one minute. I think that’s quite obvious”.
Talking about roles of women in movies Tom said the following.
There should be better parts for women than just girlfriend and wife or lover. Because I’m bored with that.
2) Feminist Men ─ Harry Styles
Yesterday was amazing. Unity and love. Always equal. H
— Harry Styles. (@Harry_Styles) January 23, 2017
Going on with the list of handsome British men, we have another heartthrob who is all for women. Harry Styles tweeted about his support for women’s march. Even though he got blasted for not showing up to the march personally.
But still, girls, let’s not forget that the point is supporting feminism. At least he didn’t act like many others who just let the whole thing pass by, without even mentioning it once.
But we hope you’ll join next time Harry, just to shut the haters up.
3) Feminist Men ─ Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Well, this guy is a legit feminist. He is a self-proclaimed feminist to be precise. He even gave a little bit of a backstory and explained why feminism is his choice.
My mom brought me up to be a feminist. She would always point out to my brother and me that our culture does often portray women like objects… She wanted me and my brother to be aware of it because we see these images on TV, in the movies and on magazines all the time. And if you don’t stop and think about it, it just sort of seeps into your brain and that becomes the way you perceive reality.
4) Feminist Men ─ Mark Ruffalo
Mark Ruffalo is one of the long-time feminists in our today’s list. He had previously spoken about his mother being forced to have an illegal abortion. He claimed many times that women are treated as second-class citizens and there is no way he would support that.
On the top of that, Mark shared a post on his Tumblr, originally written by blogger Libby Ann Bruce. This made a huge buzz among many feminists and especially, anti-feminists.
My response to the ‘I am not a feminist’ internet phenomenon…
First of all, it’s clear you don’t know what feminism is. But I’m not going to explain it to you. You can google it. To quote an old friend, ‘I’m not the feminist babysitter.”…
You’re insulting every woman who was forcibly restrained in a jail cell with a feeding tube down her throat for your right to vote, less than 100 years ago. You’re undermining every woman who fought to make marital rape a crime (it was legal until 1993)…
In short, kiss my ass you ignorant little jerks.
5) Feminist Men ─ Russell Crowe (How cute is this face!)
— Russell Crowe (@russellcrowe) September 24, 2014
Russel Crow is among those silent feminists, who don’t give interviews about feminism and their choice a lot. But, that doesn’t mean he’s supporting us.
Russel showed his support for women by joining the #Heforshe campaign, initiated by Emma Watson. He wrote the feminist hashtag on the paper and posted this photo of him holding the message with a cute face.
6) Feminist Men ─ Will Smith
I’m not quite sure, but if it turns out that anti-feminist men are mostly those who have never had daughters, I won’t be surprised. Coming from a dad’s position, who brings up a daughter, not once Will Smith claimed the importance of giving a personal space and freedom of choice to girls.
In particular, Will spoke about letting her daughter do whatever she chooses to do with her hair, even if he doesn’t personally like that.
When you have a little girl, it’s like how can you teach her that you’re in control of her body? She can’t cut my hair but that’s her hair. She has got to have command of her body.
7) Feminist Men ─ John Legend
I’m just gonna let you watch John calling himself a feminist. What else does one need to be more sure about it? Perhaps one more little quote.
All men should be feminists. If men care about women’s rights the world will be a better place.
8) Feminist Men ─ Barak Obama
Michelle and I have raised our daughters to speak up when they see a double standard or feel unfairly judged based on their gender or race—or when they notice that happening to someone else…
It’s important for them to see role models out in the world who climb to the highest levels of whatever field they choose. And yes, it’s important that their dad is a feminist, because now that’s what they expect of all men.
9) Feminist Men ─ Ashton Kutcher
When talking about feminism, many people like to move around some general and hypothetical ideas. But, there are some who open real conversations about real problems. Ashton Kutcher is one of them.
He was brave enough to speak about women’s sexuality and how that topic is tackled in schools. He suggested starting a conversation about female sexuality and taking it from experimental to an educational level.
On the other occasion, Ashton told Jimmy Fallon how much he admires his daughter’s intelligence. He said that he finally figured out that girls develop faster than boys, and we all need to face it.
The male orgasm is actually right there and readily available to learn about because it’s actually part of the reproductive cycle, but the female orgasm isn’t really talked about in the education system. Part of that creates a place where women aren’t empowered around their own sexuality and their own sexual selves, and from a purely entertainment point of view, to create a movie with a female lead that’s empowered with her own sexuality is a powerful thing. And if we can give teenage people something to think about from a sex perspective, I would say it would be to open a conversation where women are empowered with their own sexual experiences from an educational level as well as an entertainment level.
10) Feminist Men ─ Prince Harry
And we’re wrapping up our list with another handsome Britishman. Harry has always been known as the “wild” prince, but what he has done for charities is something no one can deny. Along with Michelle Obama, Harry launched “Invictus games” for disabled war veterans.
Feminism comes to sum up all of the above-mentioned things. Not once has Harry openly spoken about women’s rights, equal work and education opportunities for men and women. And let’s not forget who Prince Harry is engaged to. It’s Meghan Markle who is a legit feminist since childhood.
By the way, it’s noteworthy to remember that Harry is the son of one of the most powerful, inspiring and phenomenal women on the planet- Princess Diana.
We all know that when women are empowered, they immeasurably improve the lives of everyone around them. This is not just about women. We men need to recognize the part we play too. Real men treat women with dignity and the respect they deserve.
