The movie reflects deeply rooted stereotypes among people. People are pretty sure that a woman should be weak and always look “womanly”: this should be her only goal in life. The picture is different among men: a man is supposed to be always strong and those who are not strong enough, don’t have a place in society.
Mulan, however, refuses to accept the gender role, dictated by people. Mulan is ranked as one of the firsts among feminist Disney movies. Mulan’s braveness comes to prove that women are not inferior to men.

It’s obvious, she has nothing to do among uneducated village people. Her dreams and aims are different. The perfect example of uneducated and overestimated chauvinist is Gaston. He is too self-confident and is pretty sure every woman is ready to kill for him.
However, Belle is not that case: Belle kicks him out of the door. Belle doesn’t live with the rules like everybody want her to live. She appreciates intelligence and creativity. This girl definitely knows how to shut up everybody and make them respect her.

Only not Merida. Merida is definitely not a submissive type. Her rebellious soul will never let her get married to a man who she doesn’t love. Merida comes to prove that the most important this for a moan is not following the rules society forms and do everything right for them.
She does cordially the opposite. Merida proves that remaining true to your principles is higher than anything. Merida is filled with enthusiasm and dreams and is a perfect strong female cartoon character to empower girls.
Feminist Disney Movies #4 | Tiana in “Princess & the Frog”
Princess Tiana is a perfect illustration of what a real strong woman looks like. She is all engaged in business.
Tiana belongs to the hardworking type. She works in a restaurant all day and night and at the same time dreams of having the restaurant of her own.
She doesn’t belong to those Disney princesses who seat in a castle and waits to be rescued by a charming prince. Tiana instead, is never afraid of taking actions. She is definitely another strong female cartoon character created by Disney.
Feminist Disney Movies #5 | “Pocahontas
This strong female Disney character can definitely be called a real motivation for every girl. Let’s start from the beginning.
Pocahontas was raised in a family where patriarchy is the ruling family model. Pocahontas should be a good girl and listen to what father tells her. However, everything can’t be just so simple for Pocahontas, as she is not the submissive type of a woman.
She has her own opinion and is ready to fight for her dreams and ideas. “Pocahontas” can be considered totally a feminist Disney movie.
Another distinctive feature of this cartoon is that Pocahontas was one of those rare Disney characters which preferred her destiny to any romance, though it was not something non-serious.
Pocahontas was courageous enough to save the life of John Smith and endanger her own. Let’s agree, this was far not a simple infatuation. From an early childhood, Pocahontas has served as an example for many girls, not to be the victim of harsh norms and always have the rules of their own.
Feminist Disney Movies #6 | Elsa “Frozen”
The main character Elsa, the cool-headed, strong female character created by Disney is a real ice queen who is used to do everything “right”. You’ll hardly imagine her crying or making panic for any reason.
Elsa is strong enough to control her emotions which makes her an extremely cool leader. She doesn’t belong to those princesses who are waiting for a man to rescue them, she definitely will praise the one who will appreciate her strength and intelligence.
She even tries to keep her sister from early marriage saying “you can’t marry a man you just met”. Not a typical Disney phrase isn’t it?
It’s interesting, how would other Disney characters, like Snow White, Cinderella or sleeping beauty react on that.
Feminist Disney Movies #7 | Jasmine “Aladdin”
Wondering why should Aladdin be considered a feminist Disney movie? The reason is the main female character of this cartoon, Jasmine.
Jasmine is a strong female character who won’t just get married to the one as her dad wishes so. Jasmine not only refuses to get married but also falls in love with a simple poor man. This was not something acceptable however, Jasmin cared less about it.
First of all this powerful strong female cartoon character never let status dictate her how to treat people. She doesn’t even care about the rich “Prince Ali” and is not trying to impress her. Jasmin is also enthusiastically fighting against patriarchy. This smart and stubborn lady definitely deserves cheers!
Feminist Disney Movies #8 | Meg in “Hercules”
Well, overall Hercules shouldn’t be considered a feminist Disney movie, you may think because Hercules is all in the center of attention.
