Before Talking about Emma Watson as a Feminist, Let’s Get to know Her
The beauty of Hollywood, Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born in 1990 in Paris to the family of lawyers. So, this not accidental that she fights for gender equality. She might have inherited this from her parents. Anyway, besides being a gifted actress she is also a model and activist.
Getting stardom right after “Harry Potter” series Emma had to split her time between working on movies and continuing her education.
By the way, she graduated from Brown University with a bachelor’s degree in English literature. Her modeling career has included campaigns for Burberry. She also contributed to the creation of a clothing for People Tree as a fashion consultant.
She also won the award British Artist of the Year in 2014. That same year, she was appointed as a UN Women Goodwill ambassador and launched the UN Women campaign “He for She which is quite unique in its type.
It calls all men to support women. The feedback from the campaign was incredible. This is how the story of Emma Watson as a feminist has stared.
Emma Watson as a Feminist
Watson’s speech at UN Women, her movies, and other activities come to prove that she is a feminist to the core. The pretty wizard from Harry Potter established herself as an amazing force of the 21st-century feminism.
What she did was to use her platform to call men to help to win the fight for gender equality. Emma did this from younger ages. Before her campaign, she used to promoted education for girls by visiting Bangladesh and Zambia.
If you stand for equality, then you are a feminist. Sorry to tell you.
This cool quote just shows how Emma Watson as a feminist nailed all that feminist things. But it is no news that she speaks about the importance of feminism for men as well as women quite often. Once she said that:
“Feminism’s not about us convincing you that gender equality is worth engaging in only because there might be something in it for you, or in it for your sister or your mother. The question is, what’s in it for humans?” It is world peace!”
What’s interesting about this is that the interview was published at a moment when the conversation around Hollywood gender inequality, particularly, gender pay gap was a hot topic of discussion among celebs and other people.
“Here’s what I think. Feminism is not here to dictate to you. It’s not prescriptive, it’s not dogmatic. All we are here to do is give you a choice.”
Here is how the beloved actress sees feminism. And with this very same spirit, Emma launched the “He for She” campaign which simply boomed the world media.
“He for She” Campaign
When Emma launched the “He for She” campaign with an inspiring speech at UN on 20 September 2014, she stopped the suggestion that feminism is the same as man-hating.
And since it has started, millions of men from around the globe have already started fighting for gender equality. Besides the campaign has resulted in 1.2 billion conversations on social media.
The Mission Of He For She
The main idea of “He for She” is to bring the world together and strive for gender equality. Fortunately, people understand and support the idea of gender equality as a human rights issue, not women’s only. The initiators are pretty sure that when all these powerful voices are heard, they will inspire others and make a change.
This is why He as She campaign inviting people around the world to stand together to create a bold, visible force for gender equality. This equality is achieved by mobilizing equality advocates to stand together, spread the word, and change the world with real action.
On the He for She website, a map using a geo-locator records global engagement in the campaign. It counts the number of men around the world that have taken the He for She word.
Its IMPACT 10x10x10 recruits key decision makers in governments and universities worldwide to make a change right from the top.

Men as Advocates for “He for She” Campaign
Does the name of the campaign give you some implications? It is like a hint about its main mission and activity. So Emma Watson as a feminist and other people engaged in this issue understand that gender equality is not only women’s issue.
The reason Watson invites men to join the conversation is that gender stereotypes that limit women limit them as well. She is sure that;
“Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive. Both men and women should feel free to be strong.”
So, feminism is about addressing the power imbalances that limit people’s opportunities to live their lives to the fullest and enjoy it. Every fight for women needs men to join the pursuit of social justice because it is the right and the fairest thing to do.
At “he for She” campaign they believe that it is a matter of human rights, not of self-interest.
