We should encourage women to claim their power. Too many women are scared to speak out because we are taught in sometimes subtle and sometimes very obvious ways in the society that we are supposed to be quiet and polite, and we are supposed to be nice and sweet. All those qualities are great, but we should also be powerful.Ellen DeGeneres
Ellen DeGeneres Feminist | It’s Simple- Equal Rights For All, That’s What She Wants
Beloved American TV host, comedian, actress, writer and producer Ellen DeGeneres became popular during the 1980s. From 1994 to 1998 she starred in the sitcom Ellen. In 1997 this sitcom made television history when Ellen came out as a lesbian in the noted “Puppy Episode”, one of the highest-rated episodes of the sitcom.
When she rehearsed that key scene she couldn’t help but cry each time her character said she is gay. She explained that the majority of people rarely announce their sexual orientation and saying that sentence out loud in front of a bunch of people was quite scary, emotional but, at the same time, empowering.
Concurrent with the episode, DeGeneres publicly revealed that she was gay in real life as well on The Oprah Winfrey Show and in Time magazine. This made DeGeneres the first openly lesbian actress who played an openly lesbian character on a show. Can you imagine how brave a person should be to announce such a thing back in those days?
I am not fearless. I didn’t do it because I am fearless, I did it in spite of the fact that I was scared to death.
So, she was really afraid that people wouldn’t love her if she announces that she is gay. But at some point, she was ashamed that she was hiding that and she couldn’t be honest and be really who she is. She just didn’t want to pretend to be somebody else anymore so that people would like her. You know, at the time announcing openly that you are gay was still a taboo.
Coming Out As Lesbian Almost Ended Ellen’s Career
This event received a great deal of media controversy; furthermore, her professional activities were canceled for some period of time because of her coming out as a lesbian. But, in fact, by announcing that she created a national dialogue about sexuality and freedom of choice and inspired many people to come out as well.
I lost my career … yet, I was getting letters from kids that almost committed suicide, but didn’t because of what I did. And I realized that I had a purpose.
Even though Ellen faced may hardships after announcing about her sexual orientation she managed to launch a soon-to-be-successful daytime television talk show in September 2003.
The Ellen DeGeneres Show received widespread critical praise right from the beginning of its activities. That’s no surprise as her biggest goal is to leave others with a smile and as she always finishes her show she promotes “being kind to one another”. What’s more important she often gives away free prizes and trips to her audience with the help of her sponsors.
